2 Ways To Limit a Child’s Screen Time

If you are the parent of a teenager, you know how addicted kids are to tech devices. Smartphones, video games, computers and televisions have most kids staring at a screen for much of the day. What may be surprising, however, is how younger children are following suit. According to one study, American kids aged 2 to 5 are already getting more than two hours of screen time a day.

While it is important for youngsters to become familiarized with the technology they will use later in life, spending too much time in front of a screen can have adverse effects. Obesity, failing eyesight and poor sleep habits may negatively affect a child’s physical health, while developmental issues such as communication and problem-solving skills also may be impacted. Here are two ways to limit screen time and instill a healthy lifestyle in kids.

Encourage Physical Play

When children spend extended periods in front of screens, chances are they aren’t receiving the 60 minutes or more of recommended daily physical activity. Enrolling kids in athletic programs or team sports will help make them more active, as well as teach teamwork and improve social skills. Parents could also consider installing an outdoor gym Murray UT or in their location to provide a fun play area right in the back yard.

Create Screen-Free Zones

Designate certain areas of the home as off-limits for tech devices. A great place to start is the kitchen table. Now family meals can be spent in conversation rather than everyone texting friends or checking social media posts.

Parents can also make a child’s bedroom screen-free. It used to be punishment to send an unruly child to his or her room, but that’s no longer the case when they can play video games, watch movies and surf the internet. Remove televisions, computers and game consoles and make them turn in hand-held devices before going to the bedroom.

When kids sit in front of a screen, they watch the world instead of experience it. Use these tips to help get children away from tech devices.
