Just remember, skunk spray permeates your clothes and skin, it can last for up to 21 days. If you don’t try to eliminate the spray straight away it will quickly become more difficult.
It is worth noting that skunks are not all bad, they feed on pests, making them potentially beneficial to your yard. Of course, they also emit a horrible odor and can dig under foundations. If you see one then this is what you need to do:
Set A Trap
The easiest way to capture a skunk and then get rid of it is to use a trap. There are a variety of traps available, humane and inhumane. You can simply use a body grip trap to capture and kill the skunk. However, a baited trap will allow you to trap it and re-home it.
BY taking it at least 5 miles from your home before releasing it you should avoid it finding its way back to your home.
Skunks are mainly nocturnal creatures. Place the trap or traps in the areas you known they frequent and leave them, with bait, overnight.
Check them all carefully the next day.
Dealing With a Captured Skunk
The key is not to startle the animal, this is when they are likely to release the spray. It’s also worth noting that they don’t generally spray of they can’t see the target.
Approach the trap slowly, humming or even singing as you do so. This will alert the skunk to your presence and prevent them from being startled.
Carry a towel with you and drop it over the trap, this prevents them from seeing you and eliminates the likelihood of them spraying you.
You can then simply place the trap in the boot of your car and release the skunk at least 5 miles away. Just remember to keep the cage covered with the towel at all times.
Repelling Future Skunks
As well as capturing and releasing skunks transversing your yard, it’s a good idea to try to prevent them from coming into your yard in the first place.
The most effective way of doing this is to fence in your yard, use a fence at least 3 feet tall. You can also have motion-activated water sprinklers to startle them.
Also, make sure all waste is sealed inside a bin and fallen fruit from trees is cleared immediately. You’ll limit the attractiveness of your yard.
